How to Wire A 24V Battery for Electric Scooter

Wiring a 24V battery for an electric scooter involves connecting batteries in series to achieve the required voltage. Below is a step-by-step guide, including safety precautions and common configurations:

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Two 12V batteries (lead-acid or lithium-ion) OR lithium-ion cells (e.g., 18650) configured for 24V.
  • Battery holder or enclosure (if using loose cells).
  • Battery Management System (BMS) (for lithium-ion batteries).
  • Insulated wire (12–14 AWG for high current).
  • Fuses or circuit breakers (optional but recommended).
  • Multimeter (to verify voltage and polarity).
  • Soldering iron, heat shrink tubing, or connectors (e.g., XT60, Anderson).
  • Safety gear: gloves, goggles.

Step 1: Choose Your Battery Type

Option A: Lead-Acid Batteries (SLA)

  • Use two 12V sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries.
  • Pros: Simple to wire, affordable, robust.
  • Cons: Heavy, shorter lifespan compared to lithium.

Option B: Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • Use 6 lithium-ion cells in series (6S configuration for 24V nominal).
    • Example: 6 x 3.7V Li-ion cells = 22.2V nominal (24.6V fully charged).
    • Add a 6S BMS to balance cells and protect against overcharge/discharge.
  • Pros: Lightweight, longer lifespan, higher efficiency.
  • Cons: Requires careful wiring and a BMS.

Step 2: Wiring in Series (24V Setup)

For Lead-Acid Batteries

  1. Connect the positive (+) terminal of the first 12V battery to the negative (-) terminal of the second battery.
  2. The remaining positive terminal (from the second battery) and negative terminal (from the first battery) become your 24V output.
    • Total Voltage: 12V + 12V = 24V.

For Lithium-Ion Cells

  1. Arrange 6 cells in series (end-to-end):
    • Cell 1 (+) → Cell 2 (-) → … → Cell 6 (-).
  2. Connect the BMS to the cell terminals:
    • Balance wires from the BMS to each cell’s (+) terminal.
    • BMS output wires (total 24V) go to the scooter’s controller.

Step 3: Add Safety Features

  1. Fuse: Install a fuse (e.g., 20–30A) on the positive wire to prevent short circuits.
  2. BMS (Lithium Only): Ensures cells charge/discharge evenly and protects against overcurrent, overvoltage, and undervoltage.
  3. Insulation: Cover all connections with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape.

Step 4: Connect to the Scooter

  1. Match the battery’s polarity (24V+) to the scooter’s controller input:
    • Red wire (+) to the controller’s positive terminal.
    • Black wire (-) to the controller’s negative terminal.
  2. Use connectors compatible with your scooter (e.g., XT60, Anderson Powerpole).

Step 5: Test the System

  1. Use a multimeter to confirm 24V output (or ~25.2V for fully charged lithium).
  2. Check for loose connections or sparks when powering on.
  3. Test the scooter at low speed first to ensure stability.

Safety Tips

  • Never mix old and new batteries or different chemistries.
  • Avoid short circuits: Double-check polarity before connecting.
  • For lithium batteries, always use a BMS to prevent fires.
  • Store batteries in a ventilated, fireproof enclosure.

Common 24V Configurations

Battery TypeConfigurationTotal Voltage
Lead-Acid (SLA)2 x 12V in series24V
Li-ion (18650)6S (6 cells)22.2V–25.2V

Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Verify connections with a multimeter.
  • Overheating: Check for short circuits or mismatched cells.
  • Low Range: Ensure all cells are balanced (use BMS for lithium).

By following these steps, you’ll create a safe and reliable 24V battery pack for your electric scooter. Always consult your scooter’s manual for specific voltage/current requirements.
